Police Scotland recently conducted a major operation on the A90 between Edinburgh and Fraserburgh in an attempt to influence driver behaviour on the busy route.
The operation ran from 11-15 April and involved ten road policing units and multiple divisions of Police Scotland as well as the camera safety unit.
As a result of the operation, around 600 vehicles were stopped and a range of offences were detected, including:
- 185 drivers caught speeding, with five travelling over 100mph,
- 31 drivers were stopped for careless or dangerous driving, such as tailgating or undertaking,
- 17 drivers were caught using mobile phones while driving,
- 43 vehicles were detected with no tax or valid MOT’s,
- 11 vehicles were seized as drivers had no insurance, or were disqualified from driving, had no licence or were driving outwith the conditions of their licence.
"We have carried out a number of operations to reduce road casualties and influence driver and road user behaviour, as well as detecting and deterring criminality on our roads,” explained Sergeant Steve Manson from the Trunk Road Policing Group.
"The figures show the benefit of these types of operations, with a wide variety of offences being detected and a number of dangerous vehicles being put off the road,” he said. “Some of the drivers who were stopped for more serious offences will be summoned to Court at a later date, however many of the drivers were issued with fixed penalties of three points on their licence and a £100 fine.”
"Road Policing Officers and units will continue to work together carrying out similar operations to target specific areas or routes," he added.
